In a tragic turn of events, a private school teacher has been taken into custody by the Melparamba police for his alleged involvement in the murder-suicide case of a five-year-old girl and her mother that occurred in Kasaragod’s Kalnad grama panchayat nearly two months ago. The accused, identified as Safan (29), a resident of Erol in Bare village of Udma grama panchayat, is facing charges of abetment of suicide and destruction of evidence.
The incident, which unfolded on September 15, saw the lifeless bodies of Rubina (30), a playschool teacher, and her daughter Nayana Mariyam discovered in a community well close to their residence at Aramanganam. Rubina and her daughter shared their home with her parents, sister, and the sister’s three children. Initially, suspicions among neighbors and panchayat members centered on financial difficulties as the potential cause for Rubina’s desperate act, despite the family having recently traveled to North India and visited the iconic Taj Mahal just a week prior.
Upon her husband Thajudeen’s return from his job in a West Asian country, he filed a formal complaint with the Melparamba police, seeking a thorough investigation into the tragic deaths. Through their inquiries, the police unearthed a complex relationship between Rubina and Safan, who resided 6km apart and had initially connected through social media nine years ago.
Their relationship took a tumultuous turn when Safan made the decision to marry another woman, leading to an intense dispute between the two. It was shortly after this altercation that the woman and her child were discovered lifeless in a well. Disturbingly, the police found that the text messages and chats between Safan and Rubina had been deliberately deleted, raising further suspicions about his involvement.
Following these developments, a court in Kasaragod has ordered Safan into judicial custody, marking a tragic and deeply distressing incident that has left a community in shock and mourning.
