A tragic incident occurred on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway as a moving double-decker sleeper bus caught fire, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of a 28-year-old woman named Maya and her 5-year-old daughter, Deepali. The mother and daughter were on their way to their village in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, to celebrate Diwali, a major Hindu festival. The incident unfolded near the Jharsa flyover, a crucial route connecting Delhi and Jaipur. A total of 29 people suffered burns in the fire, with 11 of them initially admitted to a civil hospital. Among the injured, Mithlesh and Harish were in critical condition and were subsequently referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
The authorities are actively seeking the bus driver and his helper, as there are allegations that some prohibited items may have been stored in the bus’s storage unit. Unconfirmed reports suggest the presence of a gas cylinder on the bus, which could have contributed to the fire’s intensity.
In response to a complaint filed by the woman’s husband, Dinesh Kumar, a case has been registered against an unknown person under Section 304-A (death due to negligence) at the Sector 40 police station in Gurugram. Mr. Kumar, who works as a laborer in the Dighal area, recounted the harrowing experience, stating that the bus had caught fire shortly after they boarded it at Sector 12 A chowk in Gurugram. He and some passengers managed to escape, but tragically, his wife Maya and their young daughter Deepali lost their lives in the blaze. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their grieving family after post-mortem examinations were conducted on Thursday, marking a heart-wrenching turn of events during what was supposed to be a joyous Diwali celebration.
