Five Myanmar nationals detained in Mizoram with cash, heroin valued at crores

In three separate raids, investigators seized heroin valued at over Rs 18 crore and unaccounted cash totaling Rs 1.21 crore from five individuals of Myanmarese descent on Saturday in the Champhai region of Mizoram.

A combined Assam Rifles and state police team carried out operations in the villages of Zote and Zokhawthar, which are located near the border between Mizoram and Myanmar, on Friday in response to a tip. During the raids, 2.61 kg of illegal drugs were taken into custody.

Authorities from the Assam Rifles stated that the unaccounted cash was found in Indian currency notes, and the estimated market value of the heroin that was impounded was Rs 18.30 crore. According to them, the money that was taken in was in the amounts of Rs 500, Rs 200, Rs 100, and Rs 50.

An official from the Assam Rifles stated, ‘Five Myanmarese were arrested in the joint operations.’

The arrested accused were turned over to the Champhai police for additional legal action, along with the seized contraband.

The operations took place three days before Tuesday’s results of the elections for the 40-member Mizoram assembly were announced. On December 3, there will be a vote count.
