The death toll from the tragic Kalamassery blasts has risen to five, with the recent passing of Sali Pradeep, a 45-year-old Malayattoor resident. Sali, who suffered over 50 percent burns, succumbed to her injuries at Aster Medicity on Saturday. Her daughter, Libina, had tragically died earlier on October 30, and Sali’s son Praveen remains in critical condition at the same hospital.
Notably, Sali was unaware of Libina’s demise, and the 12-year-old girl was laid to rest on November 4. The family had attended the convention together, capturing a photo on the morning of October 29, just before the blast occurred. Sali and Libina were seated near the explosion site. Sali’s younger son, Rahul, is also undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Among the other casualties, Molly Joy, a Kalamassery resident, succumbed to 80 percent burns on November 6 at Ernakulam Medical Center. The previously reported victims include Leyona Paulose (55), Kumari Pushpan (53), and Libina (12). Leyona was found charred inside the hall, while Kumari, Libina, and Molly passed away during treatment at various hospitals.
The tragic incident unfolded during the final day of a three-day-long prayer meeting of the Jehovah’s Witnesses at the international convention center in Kalamassery. Over 50 people sustained injuries during the multiple blasts. A man claiming to be an estranged member of Jehovah’s Witnesses later surrendered, confessing to carrying out the blasts. The police, recording his arrest, subsequently took him for evidence collection, recovering four remote control devices used to detonate the explosives inside the convention hall.
