Despite the Supreme Court’s ban on firecrackers during Diwali celebrations in Delhi, several areas witnessed violations of the prohibition. In locations such as Shahpur Jat and Hauz Khas, people defied the ban by bursting firecrackers. The intensity of these celebrations, particularly after 4 pm, was observed to be somewhat lower than the previous year. Few individuals ventured out of their homes in these localities. Environmentalist Bhavreen Kandhari reported instances of firecracker usage in her residential area, Defense Colony, and complaints were filed with the local police station. She expressed concern that despite the Supreme Court’s strict stance, authorities failed to enforce the ban, allowing children to suffer due to the air pollution caused by the celebrations.
In Greater Kailash and Chittaranjan Park, the intensity of firecracker bursts was relatively low until 7:30 pm, with expectations of increased activity after puja ceremonies. In Chhatarpur, sounds of firecrackers started at 6 pm, and some shopkeepers were observed selling small firecrackers to children in violation of the ban. In East of Kailash, firecrackers were also set off, producing intermittent noises of varying intensities from 6:30 pm onwards. However, the Lalita Park area of Laxmi Nagar experienced minimal firecracker activity till 7:30 pm, with locals anticipating an increase later in the night. Despite reports of moderate effects in some east Delhi areas, residents claimed that this year’s firecracker usage was significantly lower than the previous year. The Supreme Court’s November 7 order emphasized a nationwide ban on firecrackers containing barium, extending beyond the Delhi-NCR region affected by severe air pollution.
