Police releases suspect from Samantha Woll Murder case after 72 hours of arrest without filing charges

Detroit Police released an individual who was in custody in connection with the murder of synagogue leader Samantha Woll. The arrest took place on Tuesday (Nov 7) in Kalamazoo, Michigan, but after 72 hours, the suspect was released, and no charges have been filed against him. The police have not disclosed the suspect’s name, stating that additional information will be released “at the appropriate time.” Detroit Police Chief James White emphasized that while the release is an encouraging development for closure, it does not conclude the investigation, and details will remain confidential to maintain the integrity of ongoing steps.

Samantha Woll, 40, was the president of Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. She was found dead outside her Detroit home on Saturday (Oct 21) after returning from a wedding. The police believe the attack occurred inside the house, responding to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive person. Samantha had attended a wedding the night before her murder, leaving around 12:30 am GMT. Investigators suspect she was stabbed inside the house before stumbling outside.

Living in Lafayette Park, east of downtown Detroit, Samantha Woll had also worked for Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin and participated in the re-election campaign of Attorney General Dana Nessel. Speculation arose about a possible connection between her murder and enmity related to the Israel-Hamas war.

Despite the speculation, Chief James White stated that there is no evidence suggesting Samantha’s murder was a hate crime. He clarified, “We believe that this particular incident was not motivated by antisemitism, and that this suspect acted alone,” during a press conference two days after the murder, noting that the investigation was still in its initial stage.
