The state government, on Monday, lifted the suspension of P Vijayan, Inspector General of Police, who had faced nearly six months of suspension. The senior officer was accused of leaking travel details related to the Elathur train arson case to the media.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued the order for reinstating P Vijayan, emphasizing that the departmental enquiry against the officer remains ongoing. The suspension, initiated on May 18 based on a report from M R Ajith Kumar, ADGP (Law and Order), had not involved seeking an explanation from Vijayan.
Vijayan contested the allegations, and two months later, a committee led by Chief Secretary K Venu cleared him. However, the government order confirming this decision was not promptly issued.
The Elathur train arson incident, occurring on April 12 in Kozhikode, resulted in three deaths. Shahrukh Saifi, a resident of Shaheen Bagh in Delhi and the accused, was apprehended in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, two days after the incident.
