UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman fired from her position

UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman was dismissed from her role on Monday (Nov 13) amid a controversy surrounding her ‘hate march’ comment regarding pro-Palestine rallies. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has been appointed as her replacement.

In her statement, Braverman expressed, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary. I will have more to say in due course.” Sources cited by Reuters reported that UK PM Rishi Sunak asked Suella Braverman to step down, and she complied. With the upcoming elections next year, Sunak opted to make changes in his cabinet, responding to public demands for Braverman’s removal following her comments that triggered significant public backlash on London streets ahead of Armistice Day (Nov 12).

In a related development, UK’s junior health minister Neil O’Brien announced his resignation, citing commitments to his constituency work and a desire to devote more time to his children. O’Brien stated, “It’s been a privilege to serve at DHSC. Great ministerial team & spads and some fab officials. But with so much going on locally, I want to focus 100 per cent on constituency work, so have asked to go to back benches. I’m also keen to see more of our two small children.”

Following Cleverly’s appointment as the new Home Secretary, former UK PM David Cameron has been named as the new foreign secretary. Cameron led Britain from 2010 to 2016 before stepping down after the Brexit referendum defeat.
