A tunnel under construction on Yamunotri National Highway experienced a partial collapse on Sunday morning, resulting in the entrapment of 40 workers. Located in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, the tunnel aimed to connect Silkyara and Dandalgaon. Despite the collapse, officials reassure that the workers are secure with access to oxygen cylinders, supplemented by an additional oxygen supply through a pipe. Unfortunately, communication with the trapped workers remains severed.
Rescue operations, orchestrated by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and local administration personnel, are in progress. Heavy machinery, including JCB, is deployed to clear debris. Approximately 160 officials from various departments are stationed at the site, with canceled leaves and mandatory reporting to headquarters.
The collapse, triggered by a landslide, occurred 200 meters from the tunnel entrance, while workers were positioned 2,500 meters inside. Initial reports indicated 36 trapped workers, later revised to 40 by authorities. Despite challenges, efforts are focused on the safety and evacuation of the workers, emphasizing the urgency as leaves are canceled, and officials are mobilized for the rescue mission.
