Yemen Court Denies Appeal for Nimisha Priya’s Death Sentence

The Yemen Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal against the death sentence imposed on Nimisha Priya, a Malayali nurse incarcerated in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni citizen. The Central government’s representative conveyed this information to the Delhi High Court. At this stage, the only avenue for potential relief for Nimisha Priya is through the Yemeni President’s intervention. The High Court, in response to a petition submitted by Nimisha Priya’s mother, Prema Mary, requesting permission to visit Yemen, has instructed relevant authorities to make a decision on the matter within a week.

Nimisha Priya, hailing from Palakkad, stands convicted of the murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. In an effort to secure her daughter’s release from jail, Nimisha’s mother intends to engage in discussions with Mahdi’s family. Despite the central government’s previous plans to facilitate Nimisha’s release by paying blood money to Mahdi’s family in 2022, progress in this matter has been elusive. Nimisha’s mother, along with members of the Save Nimisha Priya Forum, a collective formed in support of the nurse, has been actively strategizing a visit to Yemen for mediation purposes.
