The second and final phase of assembly elections in Chhattisgarh commenced on Friday, featuring 958 candidates, including Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Deputy CM T S Singh Deo, eight state ministers, and four MPs vying for 70 seats. Notably, polling in the Naxal-affected Bindranawagarh seat began at 7 am and will conclude at 3 pm due to security concerns.
As of 1 pm, a voter turnout of 37.87% was reported across the 70 constituencies in this phase. The overall polling time is from 8 am to 5 pm, except for nine booths in Gariaband district. The first phase, held on November 7, witnessed a high voter turnout of 78%.
The electoral landscape in Chhattisgarh sees a fierce battle between the ruling Congress, aiming for 75-plus seats, and the opposition BJP seeking a comeback after a 15-year rule. A total of 958 candidates, including 827 men, 130 women, and one transgender person, are contesting in 22 districts with 1,63,14,479 eligible voters.
While the BJP and Congress lead with 70 candidates each, AAP, BSP, and regional outfits are also in contention. The state’s fate hinges on this political rivalry, with Congress emphasizing welfare schemes and the BJP focusing on allegations of corruption and governance issues.
