Cyclone ‘Midhili’ strengthens, anticipated heavy rain in West Bengal and Odisha

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has escalated into a cyclonic storm named ‘Midhili,’ according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The storm is projected to brush past the Sunderbans before making landfall on the Bangladesh coast, boasting a maximum wind speed of 80 kmph. The IMD bulletin forecasts ‘Midhili’ to reach the Bangladesh coast during the night of November 17 or the early hours of November 18. As a precautionary measure, the Met department has issued a warning to fishermen, advising them not to venture into the sea in the north Bay of Bengal and along the West Bengal coasts until November 18.

The cyclonic storm, named by the Maldives, is expected to move in a north-northeasterly direction, lying 200 km south-southeast of Digha in West Bengal and 220 km southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh. It is anticipated to cross the Bangladesh coast near Khepupara with a wind speed ranging from 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph on the specified dates. While Odisha is likely to experience minimal impact, with the cyclone passing over 150 kilometers from the state’s coast, certain districts like Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur may witness heavy rainfall. The Odisha Special Relief Commissioner has put all district collectors on alert to ensure preparedness for any potential consequences.

Additionally, the cyclonic storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to coastal districts in West Bengal and northeastern states. Coastal areas like Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas in West Bengal are likely to experience isolated heavy downpours, while Mizoram and Tripura in the northeast may see very heavy rainfall on Friday. The weather office indicates the likelihood of significant rainfall in Nagaland, Manipur, south Assam, and east Meghalaya until Saturday. This marks the second deep depression in the season, following the previous cyclone Hamoon that also headed towards the Bangladesh coast.
