Financial Dispute Preceded Departure in Chicago Shooting of Malayali Couple, Police Report.

A financial dispute escalated into tragedy as Amal Reji, a 30-year-old Malayali, shot his pregnant wife, Meera Abraham, on November 13, according to a statement from Chicago’s Des Plaines Police. Meera, a 32-year-old Uzhavoor native, is recovering, but tragically, the 14-week-old foetus did not survive.

The incident unfolded at their South Leslie Lane residence around 7:30 pm when the couple, seeking privacy, left in their silver Honda Odyssey to avoid a confrontation in front of family members. Amal, driving, and Meera, seated in the back, continued their argument. The situation escalated when Amal, provoked by the dispute, pulled out a handgun and shot Meera multiple times.

After the shooting, Amal parked the car at St Zachary Church’s parking lot on 567 West Algonquin Road and called 911. Meera, seriously injured, was rushed to a local hospital, where the unborn child was pronounced dead. Amal was subsequently arrested, and police recovered a loaded Glock 9mm handgun at the scene.

The couple, who migrated to the US a year and a half ago, has a three-year-old son named David, who joined them in January. Meera and her twin sister, Meenu, are both nurses in the US. The tragic incident has left a family shattered and a community in shock.
