This Saturday morning marks the arrival of Kochi’s first foreign cruise vessel of the season, none other than the opulent ‘Celebrity Edge.’ Brimming with 2918 tourists and 1377 crew members, it heralds the onset of a vibrant cruise season in Kerala after the pandemic-induced hiatus. Authorities predict a visit from 34 foreign and 19 domestic cruise liners during this season, underscoring the pivotal role of cruise tourism in bolstering Kerala’s revenue.
Operated by Celebrity Cruise, a subsidiary of the esteemed Royal Caribbean Cruise brand, Celebrity Edge boasts a distinctive feature—the ‘Magic carpet.’ This innovative cantilever floating platform, suspended at the height of a 13-storey building, captures the imagination as it hovers between the sea and the sky, with the ability to descend to water level.
Launched in 2018 and currently sailing under the flag of Malta, Celebrity Edge embarks on Caribbean journeys from November to April, covering Western, Eastern, and Southern Caribbean islands. Designated the ship’s godmother in 2017, Malala Yousafzai christened it the following year. Online reviews highlight the ship’s appeal to adults seeking “lively sophistication” and commend its array of high-end dining options, including restaurants and delis.
Captain Kate McCue commands the ship, making history as the first and only American woman to helm a luxury cruise liner. As Celebrity Edge graces Kochi’s shores, it brings not only a surge of tourists but also a testament to the resilience and allure of Kerala’s cruise tourism.
