A lawyer from Bengaluru has written to the Lokayukta, accusing Karnataka Woman and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar of anomalies in the provision of wholesome meals for children at Anganwadi centres.
The Women and Child Development Department has been accused of corruption totaling more than Rs 600 crore by advocate Nataraja Sharma. He said that unfair tenders for feeding Anganwadis were given to cooperatives that weren’t qualified.
The complaint claims that Hebbalkar and department representatives gave contracts to Christie Fried Gramme Company, which was placed on the blacklist. The complaint also claimed that the food that contractors provided to Anganwadis was of a lower quality than what was necessary. It was necessary for the High Court to mandate that local service bodies oversee the provision of food.
According to the complaint, a supply firm that was placed on a blacklist was awarded the tender, defying the court’s decision.
The director, JC Prakash, the principal secretary of the department of women and child development, and Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar were all named in the complaint as having engaged in illegal activities.
