Nava Kerala Sadas’ Initial Grievance: High Liquor Costs with Limited Intoxication, Claims Regular Customer.

Alcoholics are shedding anonymity to voice concerns with the government, marking a notable moment in Nava Kerala Sadas. Vishwambaran Karicheri, a Kasaragod resident, lodged a complaint against the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco), alleging the sale of substandard liquor. In his handwritten five-line plea, he emphasized that Kerala’s liquor lacks the intoxication found in Goan counterparts, despite being priced significantly higher. Addressing the Chief Minister, he stated, “Dear Chief Minister, No kick for (Kerala) liquor. Goan quarter (250ml) sold for Rs 150 sends me into a stupor. But Kerala liquor for Rs 400 (500ml) has no kick. Do something.”

Submitting the complaint at the Bevco outlet in Kasaragod, Vishwambaran received assurance from the store in-charge, Sreekumar, that the petition would reach higher authorities. The incident occurred as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his cabinet initiated the 37-day Nava Kerala Sadas campaign, commencing in Manjeshwar, Kasaragod. As the ministers tour constituencies, gathering public grievances, Vishwambaran opted to present his complaint at the Bevco outlet instead of attending the Sadas event.

Kerala, known for imposing high excise duties on alcohol, has drawn criticism from Vishwambaran, who emphasized the significant contribution of liquor and lottery buyers to the government’s revenue. Asserting the need for value in their spending, he remarked, “So at least we need the bang for the buck we are spending on liquor.”
