Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the potential crisis posed by artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes, emphasizing the need for media awareness to educate the public. Speaking at BJP’s ‘Diwali Milan,’ he shared a lighthearted moment about a deepfake video featuring him singing at a garba festival.
In a diverse society like India, he expressed concerns about deepfakes causing societal disaffection, emphasizing the lack of parallel verification systems in a significant section of society. Modi called for vigilance, stating, “A new crisis is emerging due to deepfakes produced through artificial intelligence.”
He drew parallels between the impact of controversial movies in the past and the current challenges posed by deepfakes, suggesting that like cigarette products carry health warnings, deepfakes should include disclosures. Modi linked these concerns to his vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India) by 2047, urging media support to raise awareness.
Addressing India’s achievements during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ‘vocal for local’ campaign, Modi urged the media to highlight the country’s strengths truthfully. He emphasized that ideas related to a developed India and economic progress would dominate discourse for the next 25 years.
Reflecting on the festive season, he noted the disappearance of COVID-19 concerns and acknowledged the global reach of festivals like Durga Puja and Navratri due to electronic media. Additionally, Modi expressed concern for the health of journalists, especially in the context of the pandemic, advocating for regular health check-ups due to their demanding and stressful lives.
