In order to do rid of ticket waiting lists, Indian Railways intends to add 3,000 more passenger trains to its network over the course of the next five years.
Notably, during the 2023 holiday season, trains traveling to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh had extreme crowding, causing passengers to struggle to board train coaches and wait in lengthy lines for general tickets at the station because reserved classes had extensive waiting lists.
Speaking to India Today TV, a source close to the Indian Railways said, ‘Roughly 3,000 trains are envisioned to be added to the existing trains by 2027… if they are added at this speed, one could have a confirmed ticket by 2027… which means we will try and end the waiting lists by then…’
From 10,186 passenger trains per day before to the Covid pandemic, the Indian Railways now operates 10,747 trains daily.
The goal, according to the Indian Railways source, is to boost train operations to 13,0000 daily.
In the upcoming years, it is anticipated that passenger traffic will increase from 800 crore to 1,000 crore.
Indian Railways also intends to modernize the coach system on its passenger trains, according to sources who spoke with India Today TV.
There will be a single ‘seamless train’ consisting of 22 coaches in place of the previous coach-based arrangement in trains, where coaches are connected to one another.
According to insiders, the new arrangement will be referred to as a ‘tain set’ of 22 coaches, and the coaches will be integrated with a novel technology known as ‘semi-permanent cupplers technology.’
