In a tragic incident on Friday, Parappallil Thomas, a 58-year-old farmer from Wayanad, took his own life, marking the third farmer suicide in Kerala in recent weeks.
Thomas, known as Joy, was discovered hanging from a tree at 4:30 pm after being missing since morning. His relatives revealed the burden of a debt exceeding Rs 10 lakh. Jineesh, the son of Thomas’s brother, shared that the distress began when Thomas lost a milking cow, a significant source of daily milk production.
Struggling to repay loans taken for cattle purchase and his son’s education, Thomas had financial obligations with Bank of Baroda and Kerala Gramin Bank, along with loans from friends for emergencies.
Following the police inquest by Mananthavadi Police, Thomas’s body was moved to the District Hospital for postmortem. The final rites will take place at St George Forane Church, Kallody. Thomas is survived by his wife Lissamma and children Sijo and Silja.
This tragedy follows the suicides of two other farmers this month in Kerala. On November 15, 71-year-old Naduvath Subramanian, a cancer survivor, took his life due to challenges related to wild elephant raids on his land. Additionally, on November 11, K G Prasad (55) from Alappuzha ended his life, attributing it to the state government’s failure to close a loan against the paddy he sold to the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.
