Chardham Yatra ends with record 56 million pilgrims visiting Himalayan shrines

The renowned Chardham Yatra, a pilgrimage to the Himalayan shrines, concluded on Saturday as the portals of Shri Badrinath Dham were closed for the winter season. This year’s pilgrimage set a new record with a staggering 56,13,635 pilgrims, marking a significant increase of 10 lakh compared to the previous year. Dr. Harish Gaur, the media in-charge of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee, shared a unique tradition observed during the closing ceremony, where the temple’s rawal dons female attire to carry Goddess Lakshmi to the sanctum sanctorum of the Badrinath temple on the fifth day of Panch Puja.

The Chardham Yatra, which also concluded on the same day, attracted pilgrims from far and wide. Ajendra Ajay, the president of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee, highlighted the unprecedented success of this year’s pilgrimage, surpassing the previous year’s numbers by over 10 lakh pilgrims. The New Indian Express reported that a total of 735,244 pilgrims visited Yamunotri Dham, 905,174 to Gangotri Dham, 1,961,025 to Kedarnath Dham, 1,834,729 to Badrinath Dham, and 177,463 to Hemkund Sahib during this year’s Chardham Yatra.
