Customs officials made a significant seizure at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, uncovering a staggering Rs 2 crore worth of gold from two smugglers over the weekend.
In one instance, a passenger arriving from Dubai was found with ten lungis soaked in a gold solution, totaling 4.3 kg. Customs sources note that the actual gold weight can only be determined upon extraction, with an estimated usage of around 1 kg on the lungis.
Simultaneously, another passenger, Kaithaparambil Shuhaib, was apprehended for attempting to smuggle 2,201.6 grams of gold concealed within a steel flask in his hand baggage. After extraction, the gold weighed 1,959.85 grams, valued at Rs 1,19,35,487.
Shuhaib, arriving on an Emirates flight, was arrested based on intelligence provided by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and has been remanded to judicial custody. The Customs operation underscores their vigilance in thwarting various innovative smuggling attempts.
