An official stated on Saturday that five cops, including an ASI, were nabbed for taking 125 seized liquor bottles and 15 table fans worth Rs 1.97 lakh from a police station in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district.
The liquor bottles and fans were kept in the women’s lock-up at Bakor police station in Khanpur taluka, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) PS Valvi.
Valvi said, ‘Bakor police had seized 482 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and 75 table fans from a person who was trying to smuggle liquor into Gujarat by hiding them behind the boxes of table fans,’ adding, ‘As the room meant to store such articles was full, they were kept in the women’s lock-up.’
Prior to a senior officer inspection, police personnel were ordered to provide a list of seized objects and to clean up the police station. However, while cleaning the lock-up, the official found empty or broken crates of IMFL bottles and fans.
Following a check, it found that 125 IMFL bottles worth Rs 1.57 lakh and 15 fans worth Rs 40,500 were missing, prompting DSP Valvi to file a FIR on November 13. According to the FIR, ASI Arvind Khant planned the crime while on duty on October 25. His image was taken by the CCTV camera.
The CCTV tape also showed Khant and chief constable Lalit Parmar entering the lock-up at 10 p.m. and exiting with spirits bottles, according to the report. Khant was also accused of briefly turning off the CCTV cameras.
According to Valvi, Khant, Parmar, and three other police officers were arrested under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 380 (stealing) and other connected crimes. A sixth suspect, a local who reportedly assisted them, was missing.
