Govt greenlights 27 Companies for production linked incentive scheme

On Saturday, the government announced its approval of 27 companies, including major players like Dell, HP, Foxconn, and Lenovo, for participation in the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme aimed at boosting the domestic manufacturing of IT hardware. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Electronics and Information, highlighted that this strategic move positions India as a significant player in the production of personal computers (PCs), servers, laptops, and tablets. The approved list comprises companies such as Flextronics, VVDL, Rising Stars Hi-Tech, India Sales, Padget Electronics, and others.

Introduced in May 2023 with an allocation of Rs 17,000 crore, the revised PLI scheme for IT hardware aimed to stimulate local production of various devices. Despite the initial success of the PLI scheme for mobile manufacturing, the IT hardware initiative faced challenges. In response, the government implemented measures such as initially requiring a license for importing these items starting November 1, 2023, though later clarifying that companies only needed to register on the government portal. In October 2023, an Import Management System was introduced to monitor and regulate the importation of laptops, tablets, and computers, emphasizing the need for transparency in shipments from trusted sources.

While the government has approved the applications of the mentioned companies, it is still in the process of evaluating additional applications. The move reflects ongoing efforts to fortify India’s position in the global IT hardware manufacturing landscape.
