Kerala experts blame students’ short attention span to online learning

Even years after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, its effects persist globally, with many individuals grappling with post-disease complications. The educational landscape underwent a seismic shift as learning moved predominantly online. Despite over three years passing since the pandemic’s outbreak, educators argue that students are yet to fully acclimate to traditional classroom learning.

Experts note a decline in students’ attention spans, accompanied by a noticeable lack of enthusiasm and motivation. V S Kaikasi, an assistant professor at the University of College, expresses disappointment over students’ diminished focus and concentration. Kaikasi, who previously nurtured students’ talents and coordinated their participation in competitions, observes a stark decline in engagement, with students showing little interest in recommended reading materials.

Arun Surendran, the strategic director and principal of Trinity College of Engineering in Thiruvananthapuram, echoes Kaikasi’s concerns. He observes a prevalent trend among college students prioritizing government job preparation over their regular coursework. The shift is evident as students focus on competitive exam guides, diverting attention from the standard college curriculum. Additionally, educators express worry about students’ diminishing socializing skills, noting a shift from in-person interactions to increased smartphone reliance in classrooms.
