Kerala: Man loses Rs 1.39L in train ticket refund on fake IRCTC website

A resident of North Paravoor in Kerala has fallen victim to cyber fraud, losing Rs 1.39 lakh while attempting to verify the refund status of a canceled train ticket. The North Paravoor police have initiated an investigation into the incident, suspecting that the individual was deceived by cybercriminals who had created a fraudulent IRCTC website.

The unfortunate incident unfolded when the victim, who had recently canceled a train ticket and was anticipating a refund, sought to check the refund status. In an attempt to find the IRCTC customer care number, the individual turned to Google and inadvertently accessed a counterfeit IRCTC website, as per statements from a police officer. Upon calling the customer care number provided on the fraudulent website, the victim was assured by the person who answered the call that the ticket cancellation refund process would be promptly initiated.

Law enforcement is now actively looking into the case, emphasizing the growing threat of online scams and the need for heightened awareness to prevent individuals from falling prey to such cyber frauds. Authorities recommend exercising caution and verifying the authenticity of websites and customer care numbers to mitigate the risk of financial losses.
