In a significant crackdown, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) successfully neutralized Rashid Kalia, a notorious criminal with a long list of charges including 40 murders, in a Saturday morning encounter in Jhansi district. Kalia, alias Gauda alias Biru, aged 45 and hailing from Mahoba district in the Bundelkhand region, was a resident of the Chakeri area in Kanpur.
The wanted criminal, carrying a substantial bounty of Rs 1.25 lakh on his head, faced a litany of criminal offenses such as murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, cheating, extortion, and intimidation. The police sources revealed that the encounter unfolded when Kalia was reportedly planning a contract killing in Mauranipur, Jhansi. Acting on a tip-off, the UP STF surrounded Kalia, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. Kalia sustained injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
Despite the successful operation, the encounter did not come without consequences, as a deputy SP and an Inspector rank officer were struck by bullets. Fortunately, their bulletproof vests prevented any serious injuries. Kalia had been evading law enforcement, maintaining a low profile, and was implicated in the high-profile murder of Pintu Sengar, a notorious gangster turned politician, in Chakeri in June 2020. The STF seized two factory-made pistols and the motorcycle Kalia was riding at the time of the encounter, marking a significant achievement in curbing organized crime in the region.
