Indian army personnel, engaged in rescuing 41 workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel, have initiated the construction of a new track for vertical drilling. The rescue mission faced a setback on Friday due to a concerning ‘cracking sound.’ Reports indicate that preparations for drilling a vertical hole from the hilltop commenced on Saturday.
With the sun setting behind the mountains, officials expressed optimism that the Border Roads Organisation’s (BRO) road, establishing an alternative route to the Silkyara tunnel under construction, would be ready by Sunday afternoon. This development raised hopes for the stalled rescue mission to recommence.
Major Naman Narula from BRO stated, “We are trying to make a vertical track from the top of the tunnel… Simultaneously, we are conducting a survey to know how much time it will take. As per our calculations, the track should be ready by tomorrow afternoon.”
On Saturday, a high-performance drilling machine arrived from Indore, set to pierce through the tunnel rubble on the Char Dham route. The machine’s assembly is underway, marking a crucial step in resuming the drilling process, as confirmed by officials at the site.
