Fire ravages Visakhapatnam jetty zone, destroying approx 35 Boats

In the early hours of Monday, a fire erupted at a jetty area, causing significant damage as it consumed at least 30 fishing boats. The incident, reported around 1 am, occurred where the fishing boats were moored, resulting in eight suspected explosions believed to be caused by LPG cylinders.

Upon receiving the alarm, firefighting teams promptly arrived at the scene, initiating a three-hour battle to quell the flames by approximately 4 am. Visakhapatnam District Fire Officer S Renukayya reported the deployment of 12 fire tenders, with assistance sought from the National Disaster Response Force and the Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

ADGP Law and Order Ravi Shankar disclosed that one ship ignited, potentially due to late-night activities on board. Fortunately, quick intervention by other boatmen involved in festivities led to the detachment of the burning ship, preventing a more extensive disaster. The ship, laden with diesel and gas cylinders, posed an escalated threat, causing the fire to spread to adjacent vessels at the jetty.

The arduous firefighting efforts extended over five hours before successfully bringing the blaze under control. The substantial property loss, estimated in crores, prompted police to initiate an investigation, registering a case to ascertain the root cause of the fire and its destructive aftermath.
