International Tunnelling Expert Arnold Dix played a crucial role in the ongoing rescue mission for the 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel collapse in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Conducting an inspection at the site on Monday, Arnold Dix, who also serves as the president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, expressed optimism about the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Arnold Dix’s visit included an assessment of the tunnel and the area above it, where vertical drilling operations are set to commence. Professor Dix conveyed a positive outlook on the rescue efforts, collaborating with multiple agencies employing a four-pronged approach to the operation. One strategy under consideration involves vertical drilling from above the tunnel face.
As the rescue operation enters its ninth day, continuous efforts are being made to free the 41 workers. The Uttarakhand government, in coordination with the central authorities, remains in constant communication and is focused on maintaining the morale of the trapped laborers in the 2 km-long tunnel segment. The tunnel section where the workers are stranded has access to electricity and water, and they are supplied with essential items such as channa, murmure, dry fruits, and medicines through a 4-inch compressor pipeline. The collaborative efforts and various approaches, including Arnold Dix’s expertise, are integral to the ongoing mission to safely rescue the trapped workers in the Silkyara tunnel collapse.
