Indian captain Rohit Sharma openly acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, particularly in batting, during the World Cup final against Australia. The Aussies restricted India to a below-par 240 on a challenging pitch, ultimately securing a historic sixth title with a six-wicket victory.
In the post-match presentation, Rohit expressed pride in the team despite the unfavorable outcome. He noted, “The result hasn’t gone our way, and we know that we were not good enough on the day. Honestly, 20-30 runs (more) would’ve been good. We didn’t bat well enough.”
Reflecting on the game, Rohit revealed the team’s initial ambition of reaching around 280, especially when Virat Kohli and K L Rahul were at the crease. Despite a resilient partnership between Kohli and Rahul, wickets continued to fall, thwarting their plans.
“I thought when KL and Virat were batting, we were looking at 270-280 at that point, but we kept losing wickets,” Rohit remarked.
Giving credit to centurion Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, who forged a substantial 192-run partnership for the Aussies, Rohit acknowledged their impact on the game. He said, “Australia stitched a big partnership after losing three wickets. With 240 on the board, we wanted early wickets, but credit to Travis Head and Marnus. They put us completely out of the game.”
Despite acknowledging that the pitch improved for batting under lights, Rohit refused to use it as an excuse for India’s subpar performance. “I thought the wicket got better to bat under lights. I mean, we knew it would be under lights, but I don’t want to give that as an excuse,” he concluded.
