Following a hiatus from November 9 to 18 due to severe air pollution in the national capital, schools in Delhi have reopened on Monday. Accompanied by their parents, students arrived early in the morning to attend classes in the Geeta Colony area. The Delhi government had announced the resumption of physical classes for schools in Delhi on November 20, 2023, citing a significant decline in pollution levels and an improved Air Quality Index (AQI). The Directorate of Education had earlier declared a winter break from November 9-18, directing all schools in Delhi to suspend physical classes (except for classes 10 and 12) due to the poor air quality.
The decision to resume physical classes was influenced by the improving AQI and the IMD’s forecast, indicating no significant degradation in Delhi’s air quality in the near future. The reopening encompasses all classes from pre-school to grade 12 in government-aided and privately recognized schools in Delhi. To mitigate any adverse impact on students’ studies resulting from school closures, the holidays were adjusted to coincide with the winter break. However, despite the reopening, the air quality in the national capital remained ‘very poor’ at 8:30 on Monday morning, with an overall air quality index recorded at 310.
