Within a day of being apprehended, 22 fishermen from Rameswaram were released by the Sri Lankan government on Sunday, thanks to the intervention of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The fishermen, originating from the Pamban area, had been arrested and had two of their boats confiscated by the Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday for an alleged violation of the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). A delegation of fishermen approached Nirmala Sitharaman during her visit to Rameswaram for the PM SVANidhi credit outreach program, urging her to take steps for the release of the detained fishermen. Facing adverse weather conditions, the fishermen had been stranded in international waters. Subsequently, Sitharaman engaged with the Ministry of External Affairs and the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka to secure their release. The fishermen returned to India on Sunday, expressing their gratitude to Minister Sitharaman for her efforts.
