Andhra HC rules against employment of Non-Hindus in temples

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has issued a ruling stating that individuals of religions other than Hinduism are not eligible for employment in temples. According to Justice Harinath Nunepally, only those who adhere to the Hindu religion can be employed in temple positions. The decision came in response to the dismissal of a petition by P Sudershan Babu, who was removed from service by the Srisailam Devasthanam executive officer after it was discovered that he concealed his identity as a Christian to secure a compassionate appointment as a record assistant. Sudershan Babu initially claimed Hindu identity in 2002 but later married a woman from the Christian community in 2010, leading to allegations against him for falsely obtaining employment as a Hindu.

Justice Harinath, after examining various documents, found evidence that Sudershan Babu concealed his religion to secure the job, and his removal from service was deemed appropriate. The judge highlighted that the register of the Holy Cross Church recorded Sudershan Babu’s religion as Christian, contradicting his claim, and emphasized that if he had married without converting to Christianity, it should have been registered under the Special Marriages Act, 1954, which was not the case in this instance.
