Just before takeoff, woman gives birth on plane headed for France

An pregnant mother gave birth on board the Pegasus Airlines flight, which was scheduled to depart from Istanbul and travel to Marseille, France. This last-minute addition was unplanned.

The expectant woman began having severe labour pains as the crew finished getting ready to take off from Istanbul’s Sabiha G?kçen International Airport, according to a report in the New York Post.

The woman was given first aid by the flight attendants before being taken to the rear of the aircraft to give delivery. The baby was then brought off the plane by a female paramedic, as shown in a video. According to the article, the baby received additional care at a local hospital.

A traveller is seen in the video gathering children’s clothing from other passengers for the baby. Due to the uncommon policy that prohibits women from travelling while pregnant, births on planes are uncommon.

‘When you review the cases, they were unexpected—these were premature babies,’ Dr. Paulo Alves, worldwide medical director of aviation medical assistance company MedAire, told Conde Nast Traveller. ‘In-flight childbirth is very, very rare.’

‘It’s not the best place for you to have your child, for many reasons. For one thing, the air is thinner, so it’s harder for the baby to breathe. It’s like giving birth to a premature child in Mexico City, altitude-wise,’ he added.
