SC orders Senthil Balaji to provide updated medical records

The Supreme Court, on Monday, instructed Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, detained by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, to present his most recent medical reports for review as part of his appeal on health grounds. The directive was issued during a hearing before Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, who were considering Balaji’s challenge to a Madras High Court decision denying him bail in October. Justice G Jayachandran, in rejecting the bail plea, cited concerns about the minister’s potential influence on witnesses and deemed bail on medical grounds inappropriate given his existing health conditions.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohtagi, representing Balaji, informed the Supreme Court of the minister’s numerous health issues and the risk of a stroke without proper treatment, referencing Balaji’s MRI reports. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta countered that the accused had longstanding chronic problems, suggesting the issues were not severe. The bench, after considering arguments from both sides, requested Rohtagi to submit the medical reports at the next hearing scheduled for November 28.
