Inclusion of Ramayana and Mahabharata in Social Sciences Curriculum: NCERT

According to the chairperson of a high-level National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel, C I Issac, the committee recommends the inclusion of epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata in social sciences textbooks. Additionally, the panel suggests displaying the Preamble of the Constitution on classroom walls. This seven-member committee, established last year, has proposed various recommendations as part of its final position paper on social sciences, a crucial guideline for shaping the foundation of new NCERT textbooks. While the NCERT has not yet made a decision on these suggestions, it is in the process of revising the school curriculum in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, aiming to have the new textbooks ready for the upcoming academic session.

The proposed changes from the panel will likely be considered by the 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), formed in July, responsible for finalizing the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for these classes. As part of the broader educational reforms initiated by the NEP, the recommendations highlight a potential shift in the content and approach to social sciences education, emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of epics in the curriculum alongside a visual representation of constitutional values in classrooms.
