On Monday, India extended a donation of $2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza. This contribution is part of India’s annual commitment of $5 million for the fiscal year 2023-24, aimed at sustaining UNRWA’s core initiatives such as education, healthcare, relief, and social services for Palestinian refugees. The Representative of India to Palestine, Renu Yadav, presented the donation to Karim Amer, the Director of Partnerships at UNRWA’s Department of External Relations.
During the handover ceremony at UNRWA’s field office in Jerusalem, the Representative of India underscored India’s consistent backing for the agency’s activities in the region and its dedication to providing essential services to Palestinian refugees. The UNRWA has faced challenges in delivering basic services to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, particularly after the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7, which compelled over two-thirds of Gaza’s population, approximately 2.3 million people, to evacuate their homes. Notably, this recent donation follows India’s previous delivery of 32 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people through the El-Arish Airport in Egypt on November 19. India’s total contributions to UNRWA since 2018 now amount to $27.5 million.
