India restarts e-Visa services for Canadians following two-month suspension

After a nearly two-month hiatus, India has resumed offering electronic visa services to Canadian citizens, according to sources on Wednesday. The resumption comes after heightened tensions between India and Canada in September, triggered by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertions of the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar had been designated a terrorist by the Indian government in 2020. Despite India’s firm denial of the “absurd” and “motivated” allegations regarding its involvement in Nijjar’s death, it demanded that Ottawa provide evidence to support its claims. In response to the diplomatic strain, New Delhi temporarily halted the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and requested Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in India.

Furthermore, India urged Canada to take strong action against terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil. The resumption of electronic visa services signals a potential easing of tensions between the two nations.
