The J-Alert warning system in Japan was activated due to a North Korean missile launch in the Okinawa prefecture, triggering concerns about a potential military spy satellite launch by Pyongyang. However, Japan’s government, led by chief spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno, has not confirmed whether North Korea successfully placed the satellite into Earth’s orbit.
An eyewitness video captured the audio of the alert system, urging residents to seek shelter in buildings or underground. The launch prompted Japan to issue an evacuation order for Okinawa residents, which was later rescinded as the missile passed over the Pacific Ocean.
North Korea asserted that the launch, involving the “Chollima-1” satellite launch vehicle (SLV), had successfully deployed a military reconnaissance satellite into orbit. Despite international condemnation from the United States and its allies, North Korea indicated its intent to conduct more launches in the future.
Japan’s defense ministry is actively analyzing the situation, with Matsuno emphasizing North Korea’s frequent use of ballistic missile technology and the rapid advancements in its missile-related capabilities over the past year. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed concern, stating that launching an item using ballistic missile technology constitutes a clear violation of relevant United Nations resolutions.
