National Green Tribunal urges Delhi Govt to address health risks amid deteriorating air quality

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has criticized the Delhi government for its insufficient action plan to address the escalating air quality crisis, noting the absence of “concrete proposals.” The NGT, led by Chairperson Prakash Shrivastava, called upon authorities to implement the “best possible measures” to combat pollution, emphasizing the severe health risks faced by vulnerable populations, including asthmatic patients, the elderly, and pregnant women. Expressing skepticism about the authorities’ claims of taking all possible measures to control air pollution, the NGT pointed out that the Air Quality Index (AQI) suggests otherwise.

In response to reports underscoring serious health hazards experienced by residents, particularly those with asthma, the elderly, and pregnant women, the NGT has requested an action taken report within one week. The green court stressed the need for authorities to take optimal measures to improve air quality, considering the health complications and risks faced by these groups. The NGT is scheduled to reconvene on November 29 to further address the matter.
