The University Grants Commission (UGC) is gearing up for a significant revision of the National Eligibility Test (NET) syllabus, as announced by its chairman Jagadesh Kumar on Tuesday. The UGC-NET, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), serves as both a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) exam and an eligibility test for assistant professor appointments in various subjects.
The UGC-NET is conducted biannually, typically in June and December, encompassing 83 subjects. The last initiative to update UGC-NET syllabi dates back to 2017. However, with the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020, marked advancements in higher education emphasizing multidisciplinary curricula and holistic learning have emerged.
In a recent meeting, Chairman Kumar stated, “Therefore, in its meeting earlier this month, the commission decided that an exercise to update the syllabi of the subjects of UGC-NET may be undertaken. UGC will form an expert committee and undertake this exercise.” He emphasized that candidates will receive ample time before the implementation of the new syllabus in UGC-NET, ensuring a smooth transition.
