Charles III honours BLACKPINK for their work in raising awareness about climate change

King Charles III of Britain bestowed honours upon the K-pop sensation BLACKPINK during a ceremony on Wednesday, recognizing their efforts in raising awareness about climate change. The King granted honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) to BLACKPINK members Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim, and Lalisa Manoban. Additionally, bandmate Roseanne (Rosé) Park received an MBE, sans the ‘honorary’ qualifier, due to her dual citizenship in New Zealand, one of the 14 countries where the UK monarch serves as the head of state.

The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace, acknowledging BLACKPINK’s significant role in promoting the COP26 summit on climate change held two years ago in Glasgow, Scotland. These accolades are part of Britain’s honours system, designed to commend outstanding service to the nation and the broader world.

Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé expressed smiles and greetings as King Charles III presented them with the medals. Jennie and Jisoo were attired in black outfits, while Lisa opted for a baby blue dress with a short cape, and Rosé chose a grey pantsuit.

During a Korea-UK state dinner hosted by King Charles at Buckingham Palace the previous day, the band received praise for their contribution “to bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience.” This event was organized in honour of Korean President Yoon and First Lady Kim Keon Hee.

BLACKPINK achieved a historic milestone in July by becoming the first K-pop group to headline a major UK music festival. They graced the stage at the BST Hyde Park summer festival in central London, captivating a sold-out crowd of 65,000 during their concert.
