The Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Aksel Vilhelmson Johannesen, expressed a strong interest in fostering collaboration with India, particularly in the realms of fishing and tourism. Situated in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands, with an area of approximately 1400 square km, function as an autonomous territory under Denmark’s administration, boasting a modest population of around 50,000 people.
In an exclusive interview with our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the PM highlighted the Faroe Islands’ specialization in deep-sea fishing. He expressed a belief that a collaboration between the Faroe Islands and India could prove mutually beneficial, not only in terms of export and import but also by leveraging the expertise of Faroese companies specializing in vessel construction.
Addressing the potential for Arctic cooperation with India, the Prime Minister emphasized the strategic position of the Faroe Islands as a hub for vessels, particularly with the advent of new sail routes. This, he explained, could enable the Faroe Islands to provide essential services to numerous vessels navigating the Arctic region. During his visit to India, the Prime Minister engaged in discussions with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.
