Heavy rainfall causes flooding in low-lying areas of Thiruvananthapuram

Persistent heavy rain since Wednesday evening has resulted in flooding in low-lying areas of Thiruvananthapuram. Homes in Thekkumoodu Bund Colony, Gowreesapattom, and Murinjapalam are reported to be submerged, leading to the relocation of numerous families to relief camps set up in schools. Cosmopolitan Hospital in the city is grappling with waterlogging, with the Aamayizhanjan canal, situated nearby, overflowing on Wednesday night. The hospital’s operations are partially affected due to disrupted power supply, and the first floor is completely flooded.

In Gowreesapattom, over 100 houses are underwater, with residents recounting water entering homes around 10 pm on Wednesday. The rising waters from the overflowing Pattom canal pose risks to both houses and roads in the area. This situation mirrors a flooding incident witnessed in these low-lying areas of the capital city in October. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the district on Wednesday, given the continuous rainfall, while a yellow alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Wayanad districts on Thursday. In response to the rain havoc, the revenue minister has convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation in the state.
