In Malappuram, the Vazhikadavu Police apprehended an Islamic preacher, Puthukkadavu Muhammed Shakir, popularly known as Shakir Baquavi Mampad, on Wednesday over allegations of sexually abusing a minor boy. The arrest followed a complaint lodged on Tuesday when the victim disclosed the abuse to his teacher, prompting swift action by law enforcement. According to reports, the abuse persisted for a year, with Shakir allegedly threatening the boy to keep the incidents secret.
Manoj Parayatta, the Station House Officer of Vazhikadavu Police, stated that the authorities wasted no time in arresting Shakir after receiving the complaint. The police are now investigating whether the accused has a history of similar offenses. Shakir, recognized for his sermons on religion and family, has a notable social media presence with over 23,000 followers on Facebook and more than 8,000 followers on YouTube. Despite his online popularity, he has been remanded to judicial custody, while the boy is set to receive counseling at school.
