In the last six months, the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare has achieved a notable milestone by overseeing the successful adoption of 50 children. Among them, ten children found homes overseas, with adoptive parents hailing from Italy, Denmark, Spain, the US, and the UAE. The international interest in adopting children with special needs has resulted in eight such adoptions this year.
Of the total, 24 children were adopted within Kerala, while others found homes in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. Notably, 23 of the adopted children were from the state capital’s adoption center. The implementation of a digital process through the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) has played a crucial role in generating increased inquiries from abroad, facilitating a transparent and efficient adoption process.
The Kerala State Council for Child Welfare has witnessed a surge in adoption applications, surpassing 3,000 from both domestic and international applicants. Currently, the council is responsible for the care of 164 children, and 20 children are expected to complete the adoption process soon. The council’s efforts extend beyond adoption to encompass protection and education, funded through the sale of Children’s Day stamps and goodwill donations, according to G L Arun Gopi, the general secretary of the state child welfare council.
