A fire erupted in a 24-story residential building in Mumbai early on Thursday, leading to the successful rescue of at least 135 individuals, according to civic officials. The blaze started at 3:40 am on the third floor of the building situated in the New Hind Mill Compound at the MHADA colony in the Ghodapdeo area. The flats in this colony are primarily allocated to individuals, particularly mill workers, by the government.
The fire primarily affected the electric meter cabin, wiring, cable, scrap material in the electric duct, garbage, and materials in the garbage duct from the first to the 24th floor of the building, as stated by a civic official. A total of 135 people were safely evacuated from various floors of the building, with 25 individuals rescued from the terrace, 30 from a refuge area on the 15th floor, and 80 from a refuge area on the 22nd floor.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the incident, dispatching five fire engines, three water tankers, and additional fire brigade vehicles to the scene. The fire was successfully extinguished by 7:20 am. While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, a civic official suggested that a short circuit could have triggered the incident.
