The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the eligibility criteria for the NEET-UG exam, announcing that students who have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Biotechnology along with English, even as an additional subject after Class 12, are now eligible to take the test. This decision applies retroactively, including to students whose applications were previously rejected.
Previously, the Medical Council of India (MCI) set criteria under the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, stating that candidates must have undergone two years of regular study of specified subjects in Classes 11 and 12. However, this was challenged in court and quashed in 2018, affecting candidates seeking admission in foreign medical institutes.
In response, the NMC, considering the New Education Policy’s flexibility in Class 12 subjects, framed the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023. Regulation 11(b) now allows candidates passing 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English to be eligible for NEET-UG.
The NMC’s decision, made on June 14, 2023, has retrospective application for rejected eligibility certificate applications. However, candidates becoming eligible after this notice can appear in NEET-UG 2024. The NMC also plans to withdraw court cases related to these matters, aiming for swift resolutions in pending litigations filed against MCI or NMC.
