The Afghanistan embassy in New Delhi has officially declared its permanent closure, citing persistent challenges from the Indian government. The embassy clarified that the decision, effective from November 23, 2023, is not solely related to internal conflicts or diplomats switching allegiance to the Taliban but stems from broader changes in policy and interests. This move follows the embassy’s earlier cessation of operations on September 30, with the hope that the Indian government’s stance would change favorably to allow normal mission operations.
In an official statement, the Afghan embassy expressed gratitude to Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support throughout its mission’s tenure. The statement also highlighted a significant decline in the Afghan community in India over the past two years and three months, noting that Afghan refugees, students, and traders have left the country. The number has nearly halved since August 2021, with very limited new visas issued during this period. It’s worth noting that the embassy previously announced the closure of its operations on November 1, citing “lack of resources” and the “failure to meet Afghanistan’s interests” by the Taliban regime. The embassy emphasized that certain consulates operating under the instructions and funding from Kabul do not align with the objectives of a legitimate or elected government but rather serve the interests of an “illegitimate regime.”
