A court in Delhi has deferred its decision on the sentencing for the individuals found guilty of murdering TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan in 2008. The journalist, associated with a prominent English news channel, was fatally shot on September 30, 2008, on Nelson Mandela Marg in south Delhi while returning home from work. The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Pandey, has reserved its order on the quantum of punishment for November 25, stating that arguments on sentencing have been concluded.
The court had earlier, on November 7, postponed the matter due to incomplete verification of affidavits filed by the convicts. The convicted individuals, Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik, and Ajay Kumar, faced charges under IPC section 302 (murder) and MCOCA provisions. Ajay Sethi, the fifth accused, was convicted under IPC section 411 and MCOCA provisions for receiving stolen property and conspiring to abet, aid, or facilitate organized crime. The prosecution’s case asserts that Kapoor shot Vishwanathan during a robbery attempt, with Shukla, Kumar, and Malik accompanying him. The court is set to announce the sentencing decision on November 25.
